A New Year's Eve dress has one job that most party dresses do not: it has to last until well after midnight.
New Year's Eve is the one night of the year when sparkle is not a choice you have to justify. Every other party, a sequin dress is a decision. On the thirty-first of December it is simply what people wear, and there is something lovely about a night where nobody is over-dressed.
The catch is the length of it. Most parties are four hours. This one starts before dinner and ends some time after the fireworks, which means the dress has to be beautiful and it has to be comfortable, and those two things are not automatically friends.
Choosing the Sparkle
Not all shine behaves the same way, and the difference matters more at one in the morning than it does in the changing room.
Sequins
Flat discs stitched in overlapping rows. They catch light in flashes as you move, which is the most photogenic kind of shine there is. Check whether they are stitched or glued. Stitched sequins stay on. Glued ones will leave a trail across somebody's floor.
Glitter and Lurex
The shimmer is woven into the cloth rather than sitting on top of it. Lighter, softer, and far more comfortable to sit in for a long evening. It reads as a glow rather than a flash.
Metallic
A smooth reflective surface with no texture. The most modern of the three and the quietest, which makes it the easiest to wear again in February.
Beading
Heavier than sequins and considerably more expensive to do well. It hangs beautifully and it does weigh something, so lift the dress in the store before you decide.
The Comfort Questions Nobody Asks in the Changing Room
Sit down in it. A fully sequinned dress can be scratchy where it meets bare skin at the underarm and behind the knee, and you will be sitting for a good part of the evening. A lined sequin dress solves this entirely, and it is worth checking for.
Raise your arms. A sleeve that is fine standing still can pull across the shoulder the moment you reach for a glass or dance, and a sequinned fabric has very little give.
Walk in it in the shoes. Then imagine doing that on a cold pavement at half past midnight looking for a taxi, because that is genuinely part of the evening.
Check the fastening. A long back zipper under sequins is a two-person job. If you are getting ready alone, this matters.
The dress you love at eight o'clock and the dress you love at one o'clock should be the same dress.
What to Wear It With
Keep the Rest Quiet
A sparkling dress has already made the statement. Everything else can be plain and it will look deliberate rather than under-done. A single earring shape, one bracelet, a clutch in a solid color. Adding more sparkle to a sparkling dress flattens the whole effect.
Bare or Covered
If the dress is sleeveless, a fine knit or a soft wrap in a plain color will get you between buildings without covering the dress up entirely. A heavy coat over sequins crushes them, so hang it rather than sitting on it if the party has a cloakroom.
Tights, If It Is Cold
A sheer black tight under a short sequin dress is a genuinely good look and considerably warmer. Match the shoe to the tight for a long line, and you will barely notice the temperature.
Shoes
Choose these for the walk, not the entrance. A block heel or a low heel with a strap across the foot will carry you through midnight. A backless mule at a party where people are dancing is an optimistic choice.
Where You Are Going Changes the Dress
A house party wants something you can sit on a sofa in. A short sequin dress or a metallic slip with flats is right, and you will be glad not to be in a gown when the room fills up.
A restaurant or a hotel wants a midi or a maxi with some shine, and this is where beading and satin belong. A seated dinner is also the setting where a heavy dress is least of a problem.
A night out that ends outdoors wants sleeves, or a wrap you do not mind holding all night, and a shoe with a proper sole. The dress can still sparkle. It just needs to survive the pavement.
Looking After It Afterward
Do not put a sequin dress in a washing machine. Spot clean it, or take it to be cleaned and tell them it is sequinned so they use the right process.
Hang it inside out on a padded hanger, on its own, with space either side. Sequins catch on everything next to them, and a season pressed against a wool coat will pull threads on both.
Check the hem and the underarm seams before you put it away, not the night before you next want it. A few loose sequins are a five-minute fix now and a missing panel later.
Color on the Last Night of the Year
Black is the default and there is nothing wrong with it, particularly in sequins, where the shine does the work and the color stays quiet.
Silver and gold are the traditional New Year colors and they photograph beautifully under warm indoor light. Gold reads softer and silver reads cooler and more modern, and either will look deliberate in a room full of black.
Deep colors, emerald, sapphire, wine, are underused on New Year's Eve and look wonderful with sparkle, because the color gives the shine somewhere to sit.
Red is a genuine choice rather than a safe one, and it photographs strongly. If you wear it, keep everything else plain.
Getting Ready Without Rushing
The evening starts later than most and finishes far later, which makes the getting-ready part longer than usual and worth planning.
Steam the dress the day before. Sequins hold creases in the lining more than in the surface, and a hanging steam sorts it.
Eat something before you leave. It is the single most useful piece of advice about a night that often runs from eight until two.
Charge the phone and put a spare battery in the bag if it fits. There is more photography on this night than any other in the year.
Decide the coat and the shoes in advance rather than at the door. Cold and a long walk are both part of the evening, and the two things people improvise at the last minute are the two things they regret.
Then leave a little earlier than you meant to, because everything on this particular night takes longer than expected.

Common Questions
What to Wear at New Years Eve Party?
For a house party, choose something you can sit on a sofa in for several hours. A short sequin dress with flats, or a metallic slip with a fine knit over it, is comfortable and still feels like an occasion. Look for a lined dress rather than an unlined one, since bare sequins against skin get scratchy over a long evening, and check that the fastening is something you can manage on your own.
The Short Version
Pick the kind of shine that suits the room, check that it is lined and that you can fasten it alone, and sit down in it before you buy it. Keep everything else plain. Then put it on and forget about it, which is the only real measure of a good party dress.
